We had a chance to catch up with busy student, Angela Rodriguez, on her way to becoming a Certified Wedding and Event Planner. Ms. Rodriguez is a student in Wedding and Event Planning.

Angela’s project one (1) was to design an event and bring her “A Game” to the design and event experience. We enjoyed her project and we think you’ll enjoy it too!

What 3 things would you like to share about yourself?

1. I myself just got engaged and quickly realized how different it is when I’m the bride instead of the planner.

2. I also have a full time job in addition to my business.

3. My son and fiance are a big part of my support with my business and I couldn’t do the job I do without their help.

Why did you enroll in the Certified Wedding and Event Planning and Design Programs?

I opened my own event business in July of 2015 which started as a rental company. I quickly realized that I had a talent for planning and designing and want to get as much knowledge and education as I can.

What was the inspiration for this project?

Living in New Mexico all my life, most designs and décor that I see incorporates some form of Southwestern or Native American influence or lots of red and black color palettes. I wanted to step away from the familiar and incorporate something fun and light, yet elegant. I met with a bride who initially wanted a boho theme and ended up changing her mind but I was intrigued by the idea and wanted to take it on.

What did you find to be the most challenging?

About 3 weeks into my project my original PowerPoint file was deleted during a computer update. I felt a lot of pressure and had to start all over. I decided to redo my project using Wix and ended up loving my second design and the flow of the presentation. This incident ended up being a blessing in disguise. Beyond the technical issues I would say the hardest part was attempting to make sure I was thorough and detailed in the story I wanted to share with my audience.

What was your favorite part?

My favorite part was putting my vision to paper and seeing it come together. Researching venues and vendors has allowed me to see additional options here in my surroundings. Ironically, I just got engaged in June and due to my venue research we plan on having our ceremony at the chosen venue in my presentation and scheduled a viewing and fell in love with it.

What was the biggest take-away you learned?

The A8 concept was fabulous in organizing and ensuring that nothing was missed. I have and plan to continue to use these concepts in all my future planning to guarantee that I provide my clients with the best service possible.

What advice do you have for anyone planning to start a career in wedding and event planning?

My advice would be to not be afraid to think outside the box. It sounds cliché, but being different can allow you to stand out. Going against the grain and what you are familiar with is scary, but can be so rewarding if you can pull it off. My other word of advice is to stay organized; make lists, triple check areas of concern and keep records as up to date as possible.
