We had a chance to catch up with busy student, Amy Wilson, on her way to becoming a Certified Wedding and Event Planner. Ms. Wilson is a student in Wedding and Event Planning.

Amy ‘s project one (1) was to design an event and bring her “A Game” to the design and event experience. We enjoyed her project and we think you’ll enjoy it too!

What 3 things would you like to share about yourself?

1. I believe in inspiring others and creating community over competition.

2. I love dogs of all shapes and sizes. My dream home would be a large ranch with acres upon acres where I could adopt all of the rescue dogs in my area and give them a loving home! Right now, though, a 3 bedroom home and one rambunctious white Labrador named Bear will do just fine 🙂

3. One of my dream projects would be to own a non-profit laundry and dry cleaning service where homeless men, women and children could come and receive clean new clothing for interviews, as well as wash their own clothing. I would also employ homeless men and women as well so that they could get back on their feet.

Why did you enroll in the Certified Wedding and Event Planning and Design Programs?

I have always had a love for planning weddings, and took any chance I could get to help friends and family plan their own. Recently, my husband and I moved to Texas and I decided that it was time to make a change in my career path, and take a chance on something that I fell in love with a long time ago!

What was the inspiration for this project?

A lot of my inspiration for this project came from things I would have changed or incorporated into my own wedding. For instance, my husband and I are both part German and he is also part Spanish. At our wedding, though, I didn’t include these aspects and I truly wish I would have as a way to honor our heritages.

I am also inspired with how romantic the transition from the fall to winter season is, and knew I had to incorporate that into my project. I wanted the atmosphere to feel rich in color, texture and environment.

What did you find to be the most challenging?

The most challenging aspect for me was creating a late fall/early winter themed wedding that would also be outdoors. Austin, Texas is blessed with warmer temperatures in the winter than most of the country so outdoor weddings are still possible. The challenge was to create the look of a cooler weather wedding when it is sunny and 75.

What was your favorite part?

My favorite part was putting together all of the design aspects of the wedding. I love being able to be as creative as possible and see what I come up with. I can’t tell you how many times I printed photos from Pinterest, cut them to size, and laid them out on my kitchen table to see what went well together and what did not work. It was a long process, but it was also so much fun!

What was the biggest take-away you learned?

The biggest take away that I learned is to not be afraid of mixing two styles like a beach or tropical themed location with a cooler weather design. It might just surprise you with how beautiful it could be!

What advice do you have for anyone planning to start a career in wedding and event planning?

Research as many venues and vendors as possible. Make a list of their style, atmosphere, personality, etc. It will make choosing the best options for your budget as easy as possible. Also, meet with the vendors so that you know if they are going to be a good fit for your couple.

This might be the most important aspect of planning, because these will be the people who do their part, along with you, to take care of your client’s big day! You will want to work with someone that you trust, as well as someone who your bride works easily with.
